Who is Smiling Pug?

My photo
Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada
"I am a happy pug therefore.... I am a smiling pug"! My mum is called Smilingpug... after me! Because of her love of animals and nature, she is a Buddhist and a vegetarian (thank god). She is most inspired by the Dalai Lama. We live on the West Coast of Canada and I share my home with my two older feline sisters Tika and Kizzy and my NEW little brother Sam Cooper who... is all the way from MidSouth Pug Rescue in Tennessee!! I am 11 and I don't walk to well anymore, but that doesn't mean I don't get around! Welcome to my blog.

Some Medical Help?

I interrupt Winston's Olympic posts to ask a question of all Pug owners out there. Take a look at these photos of Winston's paws.

He gets what I call these "flare ups" between his toes on the top area. It starts with him limping then a blister bulge appears and after a few days the blisters weep and bleed a little. He licks them, and licks them then they burst and disappear.

He has been getting this occasionally for some years now. We took him to a Vet who just wrapped it up and monitored it but we got no real answer to it. He hasn't had one for a while but just the other day we developed two. One on each paw. This happens only on the front paws and never on the back.

Things I have noticed is he does not like to walk on gravel surfaces at all at any time. With or without these "flare ups". He does dig in sand and on grass but I am not sure this is what is causing this. He has no known food allergies and there is no real incident or action that is consistent when these occur.

Has anyone else seen or heard of this???
Help!

  1. Poor Winston, they do look painful.

Is it possible he could be getting an ingrown hair between his toes? Our foster, El Guapo used to get ingrown hairs all the time. Sometimes they would look like little blisters.

If he keeps getting them and your vet isn't able to give you all the answers you want, you might want to get a second opinion from a vet that specializes in dermatology.

    Keep us posted!

  2. Hey!

Sequoia gets similar red bumps between her toes and she licks them alot. I use the anti-fugal yeast wipes on her paws to try to keep them away. I have no clue if it helps but she doesn't like the taste the wipes leave behind so she doesn't lick them as much. the vet thought they were allergy related but no answer for us either. Let us know if you find out. Tuni has never had these before.

  3. So we don't know any about pug feet, but once I cut my paw and my parents put this boot on me and it was terrible. I hope that doesn't happen to you, Winston!

  4. Winston, wow that paw looks painful!
Our mom is a foot doctor (for humans) and she think it looks possibly like an inclusion cyst (could be a hair or skin cell), or possible cracking of the skin due to dryness with secondary inflammation/infection. Looks like you need to see a vet who specializes in skin problems. Unfortunately, she recommends the dreaded.......boot.
    Let us know what happens,

  5. Last year after I came from from the ocean where there was lots of sand- my pads of my feet got get in between the toes. My mama put some of my ear yeast medication on them (that i got from the vet)and the problem went away. I would suggest a different vet and see what they say.
I hope the footisies get better

  6. Hi Winston:)

Pugsley & Lola's mom here. Dogs have allergies in thier skin, so my guess would be some sort of allergy. Check with your vet to be safe:)

    Thank You for the Valentine!!!

  7. Hi Winston! Your foot looks icky. I've never had a problem like that before.

I agree with everyone else that you should go see a different vet. Oh and lots of treats are in order to help with the emotional pain.

    Hello Winston,
We have exactly the same problem and the our vet is completely unable to help. Did you found what is the root cause for these "flare ups" between the pug's toes and how to heal it?

    Regards,
    Orfi
